About

Form and function. A principle for the ages. What comes first? There are valid arguments from both sides and no firm answer. Yet a great platform to launch from. Bendee was born from a spark of an idea to fulfill a bright vision. A vision to give those that care a bit more about the aesthetics in their surroundings. There were challenges to overcome that could have been easily solved with straight lines and simple curves, however, beautiful things are worth doing. They are worth doing well. Bending wood has plenty of challenges. It is not something it wants to do naturally. Now try and add light to it and that metaphorical light at the end of the tunnel seems to grow further away. Yet curves create interesting shadows and lines. When paired with light they enhance the beauty around us. A dance with light and wood if you will.

“I didn’t fail 1000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1000 steps.”
- Thomas A. Edison

There were many days spent testing ideas. We wrestled form and function. We would like this shape and those dimensions but would the light work? Would it shine in a pleasing manner. We could have left pieces thicker and wider, however, they would have felt more like an anchor rather than a lofty feather. Yet we persisted and kept that bright vision.

We pushed hard to make sure these challenges were overcome. There were many days we left the shop scratching our heads. We would make advances only to learn of new issues it brought forward. We used tried and true methods and where they did not work we created new steps to reach our goal. We would take three steps forward and two steps back. But our enthusiasm always kept us moving forward. We kept moving forward knowing that there are those of you who will see the art in the fine lines and subtle light. Those of you that can look at the curves and appreciate the effort it has taken to get there. Those of you who can see that each piece is unique and worthy of welcoming it home.
